Valentine’s Day is a wonderful reminder of the constant, unconditional love our pets share with us.

If your connection with your pet feels deeper than language can define, you’re not imagining it.

Animals communicate from the heart. They love having heart-to-heart conversations with their people, with what I like to call their Love Letters.

These messages aren’t heavy or dramatic. They’re warm. Loving. Uplifting. A shared moment of togetherness.

And chances are, you’re already exchanging these love letters without realizing it.

When we take time to slow down—even for five minutes—we interrupt the stress loop that so many pets and people live in.

When life feels rushed or uncertain, these conversations are powerful ways to calm and relax anxious pets.

At the same time, it helps us humans feel calmer, relaxed, and more grounded.

Every being—whether human or animal—wants to feel:

• Heard — You’re paying attention to me.
• Understood — You get who I am.
• Safe — I can relax and be myself.

To your pet, receiving your focused attention is pure gold. 

When a pet feels truly safe, their nervous system relaxes, their heart opens, and their true personality can shine.

Sharing Heart-to-Heart Conversations With Your Pet Is Easy

Animals don’t communicate through long internal monologues or mental to-do lists as we do. They communicate through feelings, body awareness, and intention.

These conversations don’t require special skills or perfect focus. They can happen any time and anywhere.

The key is to disconnect from electronic devices and quiet busy minds to meet them where heart connection happens naturally—centered in the heart.

• Pause for a moment and take a slow breath.
• Let your body soften—drop your shoulders, unclench your jaw.
• Bring your attention to your heart and notice your pet’s presence.
• Silently hold a simple intention, such as “I’m here with you or All is well.”

There’s nothing to force and nothing to get right. Simply notice what you feel or sense. Animals often respond through subtle shifts—body language, energy, or emotion.

Putting Words to Their Love Letters

While these quiet moments build a bridge of feeling, sometimes we long for clarity in words.

Animal Communication offers another layer of understanding by allowing pets to have their messages translated into a language their people can hear and reflect on. It deepens the dialogue that has already begun through loving presence and shared awareness.

Our pets offer us unconditional love, attentiveness, and companionship every Day.

Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, honors the miracle of a tiny amount of oil — enough for just one day — lasting for eight. The menorah is lit in celebration of this enduring light.

This inspirational holiday is a celebration of light, hope, and resilience, even in uncertain times.

Animals reflect these same qualities every day:

Light – They lift our spirits and offer comfort just by being close.
Hope – They provide a steady presence and unconditional love, even when we’re stressed or having a hard time.
Resilience – They adapt, heal, and move forward — teaching us how to do the same.

Just like the warm glow of the menorah candles, animals radiate a quiet, steady brilliance that brings daily peace and comfort, reminding us to find joy in the present moment.

Whether you’re lighting Hanukkah candles, decorating for Christmas, honoring Kwanzaa, or celebrating Festivus, may the light of your animal companions bring you peace, comfort, and a few unexpected miracles.

In 18th-century Holland, the Orangists, who were monarch-leaning aristocrats, backed the House of Orange, which chose the Pug as their mascot. Originally bred in China as a cherished companion of emperors, the Pug later became a favorite in European royal courts.

With its wrinkly face, compact body, and famously curly tail, the Pug symbolized privilege, luxury, and exclusion. 

In stark contrast, the Keeshond (pronounced KAYZ-hund) was the mascot for the Dutch Patriot Party, which stood for democracy, civic rights, and inclusion, allowing everyday citizens (not just the aristocracy) to have a stronger voice in their lives.

Affectionately referred to as the ‘Smiling Dutchman,’ these warm and fuzzy dogs spread joy wherever they went, making people feel safe and seen.

Given the Dutch history of the Patriot Party versus the Orangists, it’s easy to notice how eerily similar it is to U.S. politics.

Perhaps we need to turn to the dogs, known as the friendliest species on the planet, to show us the way.

And so, my own Keeshond, the Honorary Mayor Yogi Bear, has truly taken up the mantle of his ancestors. He joyfully shows off what the breed has always stood for: bringing smiles and genuine connection simply because people can’t help but react to his joyful face.

Of course, Yogi Bear also admits to being transactional. He believes you’ve got to pay with a delicious treat to play.

At least Yogi Bear is honest!

Dogs help politicians look more likeable and trustworthy.

It’s a fact.

Dogs became political ambassadors on September 23, 1952, when then VP candidate Richard Nixon mentioned his cocker spaniel, Mr. Checkers, in a televised speech, famously known as the Checkers Speech, where Nixon tried to defend himself against accusations of campaign finance wrongdoing. 

Afterward, people didn’t remember the accusations against Nixon. Instead, Americans remembered his promise to keep Checkers, despite being a campaign gift.

That watershed speech solidified dogs’ role as a permanent fixture in politics, with politicians understanding that being photographed and doing Tik-Toks with dogs makes them more appealing to voters.

Since then, September 23rd is recognized as National Dogs in Politics Day.

The Honorable and Honorary Mayor Yogi Bear of Westport, Connecticut

My hometown of Westport, Connecticut, is fortunate to have such a wise and lovable dog Mayor.

Mayor Yogi Bear is a 4-year-old Keeshond (pronounced kayz-hund), a Westport native, and a 2022 Staples Graduate (ok, he graduated from continuing education for dogs).

In August 2023, 1st Selectwoman Jen Tooker declared Yogi Bear the honorary Mayor of Westport [Learn more].

Since then, Yogi Bear continues to fulfill his civic duty as Mayor, spreading love and kindness wherever he goes.

Yogi Bear’s Heritage Guides His Political Will 

Yogi Bear’s mayoral spirit runs deeper than his cloud of puff.

In 18th-century Holland, his ancestors were the symbol of the Dutch Patriot Party that stood for democracy, civic rights, and inclusion. Their rivals, the House of Orange, leaned toward monarchy and exclusion, rallying behind the Pug.

Sadly, the Patriot Party and the Keeshond were ousted from office when the House of Orange regained control of the Dutch Republic. [Read more about Pugs and Keeshonde

Dogs Rule Westport, Connecticut

In Westport, we love our dogs like family, so it’s only natural that we have a dog mayor to ensure the human politicians understand what’s important to their constituents.

As the 2025 campaign trail unfolds, Mayor Yogi Bear shares his agenda:

I’m not here for your votes. I’m here to spread love, kindness, and fuzziness wherever I go, especially if there’s a treat involved!
