Every 4 months, Jamie travels 4 hours to the veterinary hospital to receive follow-up tests like CT scans, ultrasounds, and blood work. These visits are stressful for Jamie, especially since he needs to be sedated for his tests.

Since his diagnosis, his person Annie sets up Animal Communication sessions before each vet visit to find out how Jamie is feeling, figure out what he needs and prepare him for the arduous trip. Talking with Jamie also helps Annie cope and deal with her anxiety, stress, and fear.

Besides communicating with Jamie before his visits, I also offer him Reiki right before he receives his tests to help him.

Before his last visit, we decided to give Jamie 2 Reiki sessions: one the night before his vet visit and another an hour before his Ultrasound.

After Jamie’s visit, Annie shared the following:

“The 2nd Reiki session made a massive difference because it helped Jamie to reduce his stress enough to receive his Ultrasound and obtain a tissue sample without sedation! His vets were pleased because this was the first time Jamie hadn’t needed sedation! I believe Reiki was the reason why.

Luigi and Pierre

Donna shared the following,

My husband, dog, and I met Cathy at an art event awhile ago. She read my dog right there and figured out that he did not like going to the dog park at all. She later remotely read Pierre and told me why he would run away when I coughed or cleared my throat.

When my veterianarian and I were confused about how to care for my other dog, Luigi, I decided to hire the “Animal Muse” for a full reading and an Animal Reiki session. 

We first talked with Luigi because Donna and Ned were concerned about his health and overall wellbeing. When I asked Luigi how he was feeling, he showed me pain in his front right leg and trouble walking. It felt like arthritis. Donna confirmed he suffered from arthritis and has mobility issues because he was born with that leg turned out. He also has problems with his spine.

Luigi also shared that he has stomach issues that are related to his severe food and environmental allergies. It turns out the dogs are vegan because Luigi is allergic to meat-based protein. I asked the dogs about their diet. They said they liked their food but especially enjoyed their treats and the human food they received.

Donna promised to share Luigi’s insight with their veterinarian in hopes they can find ways to help him with his allergies and mobility challenges.**

Donna and Ned inquired about their dogs’ incessant barking at the front door and in the backyard. They wanted to know how they could stop this unwanted behavior. Luigi and Pierre explained that from the time they were puppies, they always rushed the front door barking. It turns out no one taught the dogs what to do when people visit.

After talking with the boys, I suggested they be taught to stay on mats near the front when visitors arrived. I assured Donna and Ned their dogs were quick learners, and with patience and consistency, everyone would learn the new front door ritual.

The backyard was another issue because there’s a walking path next to their yard. People, dogs, and wildlife are constantly walking by. Pierre and Luigi said it’s their job keeping their yard safe and letting their people know when there was any movement back there.

We turned our conversation to Pierre, who feels Luigi gets most of the attention. Pierre said he understood that Luigi had health issues, but wanted to remind his people that he deserves more attention because in Pierre’s words, “I’m perfect!”

Donna and Ned promised Pierre they would spend more time with him. They also promised to spend time with Pierre without Luigi.

Once we were done talking with the dogs, we shifted to doing Reiki, which is a separate service from Animal Communication.


As soon as I began sharing Reiki with the Corgis, they got onto the couch with me. Luigi is quite aloof and doesn’t like to be touched, so it filled my heart when he laid his head in my lap during the Reiki session. 

Both dogs went into deep relaxation and felt more relaxed and calmer after their treatment.

Donna shared her experience after their Animal Communication and Reiki session:

Both dogs were so drawn to Cathy during the Reiki healing that they proceeded to lay their bodies on her. The reading and the Reiki treatment were worth every penny!

In the few days since the reading and receiving Reiki, we are all communicating better. Luigi and Pierre bark less, seem happier and we all have a more loving relationship.  

Animal Communication and Reiki help animals feel more peaceful and balanced. It also empowers them, which strengthens their bond with their people.

Kathleen Prasad and me at Lily’s Legacy

I first studied with Kathleen in 2007 and became an Animal Reiki Teacher and Practitioner in 2008. It was nice to reconnect with her, learn more about her Let Animals Lead® Method (LALM), and share Reiki with the dogs and humans at Lily’s Legacy.

One of the many things I’ve learned from my twelve years of practicing Reiki is animals absolutely understand and recognize Reiki, which means Spiritual Energy in Japanese. In my experience, animals welcome receiving Reiki as long as the animal can choose how they participate in the Reiki session.

LALM empowers animals by allowing the animal to be in charge of how they want their Reiki session to unfold. Practicing this Method creates a powerful healing partnership between the Reiki practitioner and animal. From what animals have communicated with me, LALM is in perfect alignment with how animals wish to be treated by humans.

I’ve studied other energy healing methods for animals including Healing Touch for Animals (HTA), TTouch, and acupressure. These energy systems require physical touch including a vast array of hand positions. When I practiced these methods, animals showed me how uncomfortable they were by quickly moving away from my hands and hand positions.

I admit I felt overwhelmed and confused by the different hand positions as well. Instinctively, something didn’t feel right about forcing my touch onto animals.

A senior Australian Shepherd named Duke was my first teacher in the importance of allowing animals to be in control of their healing space. Duke’s person, Barbara asked me if I could help Duke after I became an HTA Level II practitioner.

When I tried to touch Duke, he responded by snarling and even tried to bite me when I didn’t heed his warning growls. Duke made it abundantly clear he wanted nothing to do with my hands, my presence, or my looking at him.

To help Duke, I let go of my expectations including touching him. To take the pressure off of Duke, I intuitively went to the opposite side of the room and turned my back to him. I began offering Duke distant healing energy. Remarkably, within a few minutes, Duke settled down next to Barbara and fell asleep. He continued to sleep for the next 45 minutes as I meditated with him.

Barbara was thrilled with Duke’s response and requested more sessions. Given Duke’s discomfort with my physical presence, we agreed distant HTA sessions were the best approach. I did remote energy sessions with Duke until he departed his body over a year later.

I practiced HTA for only a few months. I stopped because my animal clients consistently showed me how uncomfortable and overwhelmed they felt when I insisted I touch them. I quickly learned that using human hands with animals doesn’t always work well together. I knew there had to be a different way to help animals.

When I was guided to Kathleen’s work doing Reiki for animals, I was intrigued. Her awareness of how animals feel about human hands and being pressured to receive healing energy resonated deeply with me. I decided to become an Animal Reiki Teacher and Practitioner in large part because I appreciated how animal Reiki was practiced and saw how animals responded and recognized Reiki energy.

I’m in agreement with the Animal Reiki Code of Ethics that Kathleen developed. In working with animals, I adhere to Kathleen’s guidelines:

• I work in partnership with the animal.   

• I always ask permission of the animal before beginning a Reiki session and respect the animal’s decision to accept or refuse any treatment. I listen intuitively and observe the animal’s body language in determining their response. 

• I allow each animal to choose how to receive their treatment; thus, each treatment can be a combination of hands-on, short distance and/or distant healing, depending on the animal’s preference. 

• I let go of my expectations about how the treatment should progress and/or how the animal should behave during the treatment, and simply trust Reiki. 

• I accept the results of the treatment without judgment and with gratitude toward Reiki and the animal’s openness and participation in the process.

I’m grateful to Kathleen for her keen insight into how to best to offer animals Reiki. Her LALM truly honors animals as wise, compassionate, and loving Spiritual Beings and masterful teachers.

I’m inspired by LALM because it works in harmony with how animals want and need to be treated when they participate in sharing Reiki and in their relationships with humans. Animals respond positively and organically when we allow them to have a “voice” in their lives and when we work in partnership with them.

Tula is a vivacious, spunky, and stubborn 17-year-old Cockatoo who has severe health challenges including hormonal imbalance and frequent seizures caused by abnormally high zinc levels.

Tula’s person, Paula called me to communicate telepathically with Tula as well as offering her Reiki. Paula was concerned about how Tula was feeling after experiencing another seizure which left Tula abnormally quiet and withdrawn.

Besides talking with Tula during an Animal Communication phone session, Paula felt a distant Reiki session would also help Tula feel better.

During our Animal Communication phone session, I  telepathically asked Tula how she was feeling, She immediately showed me that her body felt inflamed as though it was on fire. Tula felt sad, withdrawn, and depressed especially since her last seizure. Tula said it knocked the wind out of her.

Tula went on to say,

Besides my body feeling like it’s on fire, I’m bored. I know Paula does her best to keep me busy and engaged, but she can never replace Nature with her trees, streams, and fresh air. I need to go outside.

I want Paula to take me on car rides. When I’m in the car, it feels like Paula and I are flying! There’s nothing better than feeling the wind flowing through my feathers while breathing in all the many different smells that whip by me. 

I relayed Tula’s message with Paula, who was 100% on-board with the idea. In fact, Paula described taking many fun car trips with Tula as her co-pilot. Paula confessed she couldn’t remember the last time they went on a ride together.

Paula then promised Tula that they’d take a joy ride to one of their favorite destinations, the San Francisco Bay, after receiving Reiki. As Paula described their past car rides, I felt Tula’s mood brighten.

After her Animal Communication session, I offered Tula Reiki. During her distant Reiki session, Tula drank in the healing energy like a fine wine. As she received the universal life force known as Reiki, I felt Tula’s mood lighten up even more.

After Tula’s Reiki Session, I received a phone call from Paula. She told me that Tula became so relaxed during her Reiki session that she nearly tumbled off her perch. Paula was surprised by this since Tula rarely goes into deep relaxation or falls asleep during the day.

Tula After Receiving Reiki Later that afternoon, I received the above pictures of Tula after Paula took Tula on a joy-ride to the San Francisco Bay. As you can see from her photographs, Tula is one happy Cockatoo!

Paula was thrilled because she noticed a happier, more energetic, and upbeat Tula almost immediately after the Animal Communication and Reiki sessions were done. Paula admitted she was also feeling more optimistic now that Tula was acting more like her usual self.

In these uncertain times, you must take care of yourself because your stress affects your animal family.

Bruce tends to worry a lot.

If you’re feeling worried, anxious, or stressed, then there’s a good chance your animal family is also feeling stress, worry, and anxiety.

Animals prefer to live in a calm, peaceful environment. When the energy around them feels stressful, it can cause behavioral issues and illnesses.

The good news is there are several things you can easily do right now to help you and your animal family to feel calm in mind and body.

I asked my animal family and other animals to offer solutions to reduce our stress levels.

First, the animals want to remind us that we are all in this together. If nothing else, the Covid-19 pandemic is teaching us that we are all inter-connected. It’s also telling us that we are part of a community, and we need to take care of ourselves and each other because we are all in this together. 

They also want us to stay positive, as well as being kind and compassionate to one another.

Animals suggest the following stress-reducing tips:

1. Stay grounded like a wise old tree.
2. BE in the present moment: try not to worry about tomorrow or yesterday.
3. Breathe. When we are scared, we tend to hold our breath.
4. Frequent play is an excellent stress reducer. 
5. Play music that is uplifting, yet calming.
6. Take frequent walks and connect with Mother Nature and Father Sky. 
7. Meditate with your animals to create a calm, peaceful energy that is soothing and nurturing.
8. Offer Reiki.
9. Communicate with your animal family about all the changes and challenging times ahead.

Distant Animal Communication and Animal Reiki sessions are two ideal ways to reduce stress while promoting overall well-being while strengthening your bond.

Talking with your animal during an Animal Communication session is similar to talk therapy in that you and your pets can express your thoughts, feelings, and viewpoints to prevent misunderstandings and miscommunications. Clear communication can eliminate issues and problems on a physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual level.

A distant Reiki session is like a spa treatment for you and your animal family that creates harmony and balance. Reiki promotes deep relaxation, which fosters self-healing along with an overall sense of peace, stability, and well-being.

One of the bonuses of distant Animal Communication and Reiki sessions is you and your pets receive their many benefits from the comfort of your home.

Reiki helped Australian Shepherd, Sparky, cope and deal with life-threatening Lymphoma. 

A few years ago, when my Animal Reiki teacher, Kathleen Prasad, put out the call for stories to include in her book about how Reiki helps dogs, I jumped at the opportunity to share Sparky’s story. 

Now In Spirit, Sparky taught me about the power of Reiki especially when it comes to helping dogs and other pets with cancer.

Here is Sparky’s story that appeared in Kathleen’s book, 

Reiki for Dogs: Using Spiritual Energy to Heal and Vitalize Man’s Best Friend

Sparky, a sweet, shy and loving Australian Shepherd, holds a special place in my heart. I’ve known him since he was rescued by his person, Barbara, seven years ago. Sadly, Sparky was diagnosed with lymphoma last summer. His body is riddled with lumps of various sizes and shapes with the largest mass located under his right shoulder. The two tumors under his jaw clearly affected the quality of his life since they made eating difficult and painful.

At the time of Sparky’s diagnosis, Barbara felt chemotherapy and radiation were not the right option, especially since it meant frequent visits to the vets, which would create a lot of stress for Sparky. So Barbara decided to let Sparky live out his life with minimal medical intervention. She felt in-home Reiki treatments for Sparky were a good idea since she had good results using Reiki to help her other Aussie, Duke, now In Spirit, when he was suffering with a chronic lung infection. 

Sparky’s first Reiki treatment lasted a little over an hour. A bit nervous at first, Sparky walked in and out of my space throughout his treatment. It was clear by his actions that he recognized Reiki and liked how it felt. By the end of the treatment, Sparky seemed more relaxed. Barbara and I discussed doing follow up Reiki treatments combined with Animal Communication to support Sparky despite his lymphoma.

Later in the day, Barbara emailed me the following, “We all drank a ton of water and then slept for a couple hours after you left. Funny how that happens! Sparky’s lumps are all very noticeably smaller. He seems perkier, but also more relaxed, if that makes sense. I think we all just plain feel better. The dogs gobbled up their dinner tonight, and played together after Thank you, thank you.”

Two months later, Barbara called me to schedule Sparky’s second Reiki treatment. She said she didn’t call earlier for a follow up treatment because Sparky’s quality of life had gotten significantly better after his initial treatment. Barbara reported that the lumps in Sparky’s jaw were approximately 75% smaller in size and his energy level, along with his appetite, went way up. Plus the large lump on his shoulder was significantly smaller and less painful.

Since Barbara noticed that the lumps under Sparky’s jaw and on his shoulder had become enlarged again, she felt another Reiki treatment was indicated. Shortly after I arrived at Barbara’s house, Sparky, who is generally hesitant about being touched, made it clear that he wanted me to start his treatment immediately. Once I initiated the Reiki, Sparky immediately placed his right shoulder directly into my hands. He sat with me for quite awhile before he would get up and walk around for a few minutes. He’d then return a few minutes later placing his shoulder into my hands again. 

This treatment last about an hour. Once Sparky felt complete, he drank some water and asked to go outside to relieve himself. Once he did his “business,” there was a clear spring in his step as he initiated play with his younger sister, Delilah, a Bull Mastiff teenager. 

Shortly after Sparky’s second treatment, he showed signs of improvement again. He easily made the move from California to his new home in Oregon. He is currently enjoying his life with his family on their new ranch. While Barbara doesn’t know how long Sparky will be with her, she is enjoying every day with her special boy. She says it helps her knowing that Reiki and Animal Communication are always there to support her and Sparky.

According to Prasad, the lesson learned from Sparky’s case is: “No Condition Is Too Big for Reiki to Help.”

Energy healing techniques, like Animal Reiki, work by releasing energetic blockages in an animal’s entire being.

Blocked energy creates imbalances, which can lead to illness and disease. 

By definition, Reiki is holistic in nature as it can effect an animal’s
entire being: mind, body, emotions and spirit. However, it is not a massage because you
don’t need to touch or be physically present with an animal to offer them Reiki.

Animal Reiki brings about a deep relaxation response which allows the body to gently release blocked energy. When an animal’s energy is unblocked and balanced, it leads to increased wellness and happiness for your pet and you!

Reiki unblocks stagnate energy to bring about balance or homeostasis in your pet.

In my experience, animals are intuitively drawn to the peaceful and calm energy that Reiki creates. Animals consistently communicate to me that this loving, compassionate energy is one of the main reasons they love receiving Reiki.

Animals instinctively know and understand Reiki’s ability to help them heal themselves.

According to my Animal Reiki Teacher, Kathleen Prasad:

“Animal Reiki is a spiritual practice of compassion for all beings. In a
nutshell, “doing” Reiki for animals simply means learning to meditate
with your animals. The practices of Reiki help us navigate our life’s
challenges with grace and surrender while we to learn to listen to and
be present for others in a compassionate space. Compassion is the
ultimate healer.”

The more I practice Reiki, the
more I feel at peace and balanced within myself. My daily practice
continues to change me in ways I never thought possible including
transforming how I communicate telepathically with all species,
including people!

Through
Reiki, I am able to connect with animals at a deep energetic level,
which increases my intuition and telepathic abilities to hear what’s on their minds and in their hearts.

By opening my heart, my Reiki practice continues to strengthen my bond with myself, my pets, wildlife and the world around me.
