I’m not a big fan of the holiday season.

Why?

Because I’ve suffered a lot of loss in December, which colors my holidays with tinges of sadness and grief.

Yesterday marked the 5th anniversary of when my beloved dog, Bodhi Bear, died.

Bodhi was an extraordinary dog. He stood beside me through my late husband’s illness and death. He supported me with love and joy when everything felt overwhelming, and I felt so very lost.

When Spirit called me home to Connecticut, Bodhi Bear sat by my side for 5 1/2 days as we bounced across the USA in a noisy RV during the middle of the Pandemic.

I had no idea when we left California that Bodhi Bear was riddled with stomach cancer.

Somehow, he found the strength to bring me home.

A month later, we said our goodbyes, and my heart shattered into a million pieces.

I’m sharing this because I know the holidays can stir up a particular kind of grief that doesn’t always fit neatly into a season that insists we be happy, grateful, and full of cheer.

The holidays have a way of intensifying loss when everything around us seems louder, brighter, and more emotional; the absence can feel sharper.

You’re not alone.

The season is rich with triggers, including memories, routines, songs, and smells that can resurrect your loss anew.

As a Pet Loss Grief Counselor, I want to remind you that grief doesn’t take a holiday or have a schedule.

5 Ways of Coping with Pet Loss During the Holidays

If you’re missing a loved one this holiday season, here are 5 things you can do to take care of yourself:

• Modify Holiday Traditions:
  It’s okay to scale back and say “no” to events that feel overwhelming or uncomfortable. Prioritizing self-care is a fantastic way to honor your pet.
• Plan an Act of Remembrance:
  Shift your focus from the absence to the love you share. Light a candle, look at photos, hang a special ornament, or donate to a local shelter in their name.
• Feel the Love That Still Connects You:
  Take a moment to feel all the love in your heart for your loved one and feel the love they have for you.
• Find a Glimmer of Joy (Without Guilt):
  It’s okay to experience enjoyment and seek out simple pleasures without feeling guilty. It’s an essential act of self-care.
• Reach Out for Support:
  If your grief feels overwhelming, ask for help.

You may also find comfort in remembering that your beloved animal’s support is still there for you.

As the holidays draw near, it’s easy to feel more frazzled than thankful. Between errands, gatherings, and to-do lists, our nervous systems can forget what our hearts already know: gratitude heals.

Thanksgiving can also be a beautiful invitation to slow down, breathe, and reflect on what we’re grateful for.

But if you really want to understand what pure gratitude is, you don’t need to look far because pets model it every single day.

The Everyday Grace of Gratitude

Animals don’t need a holiday to express appreciation; they live it, because gratitude flows naturally through their being, expressed in the quiet, wordless ways that touch our hearts.

It’s in the dog’s soft sigh as they rest their head on your foot.

In 18th-century Holland, the Orangists, who were monarch-leaning aristocrats, backed the House of Orange, which chose the Pug as their mascot. Originally bred in China as a cherished companion of emperors, the Pug later became a favorite in European royal courts.

With its wrinkly face, compact body, and famously curly tail, the Pug symbolized privilege, luxury, and exclusion. 

In stark contrast, the Keeshond (pronounced KAYZ-hund) was the mascot for the Dutch Patriot Party, which stood for democracy, civic rights, and inclusion, allowing everyday citizens (not just the aristocracy) to have a stronger voice in their lives.

Affectionately referred to as the ‘Smiling Dutchman,’ these warm and fuzzy dogs spread joy wherever they went, making people feel safe and seen.

Given the Dutch history of the Patriot Party versus the Orangists, it’s easy to notice how eerily similar it is to U.S. politics.

Perhaps we need to turn to the dogs, known as the friendliest species on the planet, to show us the way.

And so, my own Keeshond, the Honorary Mayor Yogi Bear, has truly taken up the mantle of his ancestors. He joyfully shows off what the breed has always stood for: bringing smiles and genuine connection simply because people can’t help but react to his joyful face.

Of course, Yogi Bear also admits to being transactional. He believes you’ve got to pay with a delicious treat to play.

At least Yogi Bear is honest!

Dogs help politicians look more likeable and trustworthy.

It’s a fact.

Dogs became political ambassadors on September 23, 1952, when then VP candidate Richard Nixon mentioned his cocker spaniel, Mr. Checkers, in a televised speech, famously known as the Checkers Speech, where Nixon tried to defend himself against accusations of campaign finance wrongdoing. 

Afterward, people didn’t remember the accusations against Nixon. Instead, Americans remembered his promise to keep Checkers, despite being a campaign gift.

That watershed speech solidified dogs’ role as a permanent fixture in politics, with politicians understanding that being photographed and doing Tik-Toks with dogs makes them more appealing to voters.

Since then, September 23rd is recognized as National Dogs in Politics Day.

The Honorable and Honorary Mayor Yogi Bear of Westport, Connecticut

My hometown of Westport, Connecticut, is fortunate to have such a wise and lovable dog Mayor.

Mayor Yogi Bear is a 4-year-old Keeshond (pronounced kayz-hund), a Westport native, and a 2022 Staples Graduate (ok, he graduated from continuing education for dogs).

In August 2023, 1st Selectwoman Jen Tooker declared Yogi Bear the honorary Mayor of Westport [Learn more].

Since then, Yogi Bear continues to fulfill his civic duty as Mayor, spreading love and kindness wherever he goes.

Yogi Bear’s Heritage Guides His Political Will 

Yogi Bear’s mayoral spirit runs deeper than his cloud of puff.

In 18th-century Holland, his ancestors were the symbol of the Dutch Patriot Party that stood for democracy, civic rights, and inclusion. Their rivals, the House of Orange, leaned toward monarchy and exclusion, rallying behind the Pug.

In Westport, we love our dogs like family, so it’s only natural that we have a dog mayor to ensure the human politicians understand what’s important to their constituents.

September is National Responsible Dog Ownership Month.

Being a responsible dog parent means providing walks, food, and love.

My practice as a Pet Parenting Specialist and Animal Communicator has shown me a deeper, more challenging aspect of this responsibility.

In just the last few weeks, I’ve had multiple sessions where a loving dog parent was forced to ask a gut-wrenching question: Is my dog better off in a new home?

The “Forever” Myth

The “forever” myth is an unrealistic expectation that says once you bring a pet into your family, you must keep them for their entire life.

The prevailing belief, often unspoken, is that rehoming a pet is cruel and means the pet parent has failed the animal. 

This unrealistic belief, however, doesn’t account for the unpredictable nature of life.

Being a responsible dog owner means prioritizing the dog’s well-being.

Sometimes, the most loving and courageous act is to rehome, ensuring they have a chance to thrive in a home that’s a better fit for their needs.

The following three case studies demonstrate that being a responsible pet parent sometimes means letting go, while at other times, it means providing training, structure, and effective communication.

Kai’s Story: When Love Isn’t Enough

Kai, a 1 ½-year-old Australian Shepherd, came to Emily as a fearful puppy. Living in a city apartment only heightened his fear-based reactivity. Kai communicated that he felt overwhelmed and unsafe, and his stress became too much. The day before we spoke, he nearly bit a toddler.

Devastated, Emily asked me what Kai wanted. He confirmed her intuition: he was unhappy in the city and would likely go after a child again.

In a loving and responsible act, Emily returned Kai to his breeder, knowing it gave him a chance to find a home where he could feel safe and whole.

Angus’s Story: Trusting What He Communicated

Sue fell in love with an Australian Shepherd named Angus. After only a couple of weeks, she saw how fearful and reactive he was. He chased her cats and, unprovoked, bit her friend’s son twice. Sue called it a “nip,” but a nip is still a bite.

Angus wasn’t a bad dog; he had fear-based aggression,

When we spoke, Angus confirmed he didn’t feel safe in Sue’s home.

Sue intuitively knew he wasn’t the right dog for her family. After her Animal Communication session, Sue made the difficult but responsible choice to return him to his previous owner.

Bennett’s Story: The Right Home With Guidance

Not all complex cases end in rehoming.

Colette adopted Bennett, a nine-month-old terrier mix, but quickly worried he wasn’t a good fit for her cats. She admitted she was unsure if Bennett even wanted to stay.

Bennett’s communication made it clear he wanted to be part of the family.

He asked Colette for more guidance, structure, and training to learn how to respect the cats and settle into the household.

Colette’s strong dog-handling skills and willingness to work with him allowed her to make the responsible choice to give Bennett the tools he needed to succeed.

The Bigger Picture

The decision to rehome a dog is often filled with pressure, guilt, and shame.

If you have made this choice, it’s natural to feel grief, guilt, or even relief. These feelings are normal and come from a place of love.

Being a responsible dog parent is about making choices, even hard ones, that are in your dog’s best interest.

When a dog shows aggression or isn’t thriving, making the responsible choice can feel overwhelming.

This is why it’s so important to get your dog from a responsible breeder or rescue organization that will take them back for any reason.

Listening to your gut and what your pet is communicating will guide you toward the most compassionate and responsible path forward.
