The holidays are upon us, and it’s time to celebrate the joy of the season with family and friends, including your animal family. Unfortunately, the holiday season also disrupts daily routines, which can create stress and anxiety in pets.

Your pet’s daily rituals build confidence and help them feel safe, secure, and loved. For many animals, even the small changes in their daily routine can be stress and anxiety-producing, especially for elderly pets. If left unchecked, stress can impact your pet’s behavior, health, and overall quality of life.

To avoid behavioral problems and stress, here are three easy ways to prepare your animal family so you can all enjoy a fun and joyful Holiday Season:

Tip #1: Keep your pets on a regular schedule as best you can, which includes going on walks, playing, feeding at consistent times, and keeping their regular bedtime. If you can’t keep their normal routine, then consider giving your animals additional exercise, attention, play, and love. Your animals will appreciate the extra time you spend with them. Plus, exercise and play will help you and your pet release excess energy and stress.

Tip #2: Talk with your pets in advance of any changes that may affect their daily routines, like having visitors in the house, schedule changes, or going on vacay. Clear communication makes a world of difference for your animal as it prepares them for any upcoming changes. If you need help conveying your message, schedule an Animal Communication session with me. You may be surprised by the valuable insights you gain. Into what your pet needs and wants, along with alleviating potential stress, so they can be calm and peaceful during the hustle and bustle.

Tip #3: Give your animals the gift of an Animal Communcation and Reiki session to reduce stress and anxiety and promote overall wellness, peace, harmony, and balance. Animal Reiki helps animals and their humans enter a relaxed state while gently releasing energetic blockages and imbalances they may be experiencing. It’s like a spa treatment that gives you and your pets a stress break and helps rejuvenate you.

When Andrea was heading out of the country for the Holidays, she scheduled two animal communication sessions to talk with her horse, Bert.

During Andrea and Bert’s first conversation, Andrea discussed who would take care of him and how her absence would affect his daily rituals. Bert expressed that he was on board with Andrea’s plan and his caregiver.

The day before Andrea left, she did a 2nd animal communication session with Bert to review changes to his schedule and to find out if he had any requests regarding his care. Bert requested extra treats. Andrea also reassured Bert she’d be home in a couple of weeks.

When Andrea returned from her vacation, she emailed me from her letting me know that Bert did well while she was away, especially since he tends to get stressed by even by minor changes in his routine.

Andrea also said talking with Bert significantly reduced her stress from feeling separated from her horse.

Andrea added:

“While I was on vacation, as per your suggestion, I did ‘check in’ with Bert every day. I found the transition coming home was so much easier than it’s ever been. I felt Bert was not mad with me for going away and he walked up to me when I went to get her out of her paddock – something he never does.”

Cyndi felt anxious about leaving her three dogs for a week while she went to Hawaii. She admits she and her animal family suffer from separation anxiety. She also recognizes that her apprehension adds to everyone’s stress and worry.

To reduce everyone’s anxiety, Cyndi scheduled Reiki sessions before and during her trip to help her dogs feel peaceful, balanced, and calm. The day before she left, Cyndi and her animals received a Reiki treatment at their home. While Cyndi enjoyed her vacation, her dogs enjoyed a couple of distant Reiki sessions.

Cyndi emailed me to share that her dogs were grounded and calm when she got home. Cyndi expressed her gratitude for my help with her dogs so she could focus on her family and enjoy herself.

When you give your animal family the gift of an Animal Communication and Animal Reiki session, you show them how much you love them and that you haven’t forgotten them during the holiday season.

May you find peace during the holiday season.

Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, honors the miracle of a tiny amount of oil — enough for just one day — lasting for eight. The menorah is lit in celebration of this enduring light.

This inspirational holiday is a celebration of light, hope, and resilience, even in uncertain times.

Animals reflect these same qualities every day:

Light – They lift our spirits and offer comfort just by being close.
Hope – They provide a steady presence and unconditional love, even when we’re stressed or having a hard time.
Resilience – They adapt, heal, and move forward — teaching us how to do the same.

Just like the warm glow of the menorah candles, animals radiate a quiet, steady brilliance that brings daily peace and comfort, reminding us to find joy in the present moment.

Whether you’re lighting Hanukkah candles, decorating for Christmas, honoring Kwanzaa, or celebrating Festivus, may the light of your animal companions bring you peace, comfort, and a few unexpected miracles.

Why?

Because I’ve suffered a lot of loss in December, which colors my holidays with tinges of sadness and grief.

Yesterday marked the 5th anniversary of when my beloved dog, Bodhi Bear, died.

Bodhi was an extraordinary dog. He stood beside me through my late husband’s illness and death. He supported me with love and joy when everything felt overwhelming, and I felt so very lost.

When Spirit called me home to Connecticut, Bodhi Bear sat by my side for 5 1/2 days as we bounced across the USA in a noisy RV during the middle of the Pandemic.

I had no idea when we left California that Bodhi Bear was riddled with stomach cancer.

Somehow, he found the strength to bring me home.

A month later, we said our goodbyes, and my heart shattered into a million pieces.

I’m sharing this because I know the holidays can stir up a particular kind of grief that doesn’t always fit neatly into a season that insists we be happy, grateful, and full of cheer.

The holidays have a way of intensifying loss when everything around us seems louder, brighter, and more emotional; the absence can feel sharper.

You’re not alone.

The season is rich with triggers, including memories, routines, songs, and smells that can resurrect your loss anew.

As a Pet Loss Grief Counselor, I want to remind you that grief doesn’t take a holiday or have a schedule.

If you’re missing a loved one this holiday season, here are 5 things you can do to take care of yourself:

Modify Holiday Traditions:
It’s okay to scale back and say “no” to events that feel overwhelming or uncomfortable. Prioritizing self-care is a fantastic way to honor your pet.

Plan an Act of Remembrance:
Shift your focus from the absence to the love you share. Light a candle, look at photos, hang a special ornament, or donate to a local shelter in their name.

Feel the Love That Still Connects You:
Take a moment to feel all the love in your heart for your loved one and feel the love they have for you.

Find a Glimmer of Joy (Without Guilt):
It’s okay to experience enjoyment and seek out simple pleasures without feeling guilty. It’s an essential act of self-care.

Reach Out for Support:
If your grief feels overwhelming, ask for help.

You may also find comfort in remembering that your beloved animal’s support is still there for you.

If any of this resonates, please know that the Animal Muse crew and I get it.

As the holidays draw near, it’s easy to feel more frazzled than thankful. Between errands, gatherings, and to-do lists, our nervous systems can forget what our hearts already know: gratitude heals.

Thanksgiving can also be a beautiful invitation to slow down, breathe, and reflect on what we’re grateful for.

But if you really want to understand what pure gratitude is, you don’t need to look far because pets model it every single day.

The Everyday Grace of Gratitude

Animals don’t need a holiday to express appreciation; they live it, because gratitude flows naturally through their being, expressed in the quiet, wordless ways that touch our hearts.

It’s in the dog’s soft sigh as they rest their head on your foot.
The rhythmic purr of a cat curled on your lap.
The horse that leans into your hand in a moment of mutual trust.

These aren’t just sweet behaviors; they’re profound acts of love and thankfulness.

Ways Pets Teach Us About Being Thankful

Unconditional Love.
Our pets love us exactly as we are. They don’t care about our bad hair days, messy kitchens, or missed deadlines. Their unwavering affection reminds us that genuine gratitude begins with acceptance of ourselves and each other.

Living in the Present.
Animals don’t replay the past or fret about tomorrow. Watching them chase a leaf, nap in a patch of sun, or greet us joyfully at the door reminds us that being fully present in the moment is an act of gratitude. When we slow down, we join them in that sacred space of now.

Joy in Simplicity of Life
A favorite toy, a walk, a gentle scratch behind the ears are ways pets celebrate the joy of life’s simplest gifts. Pets remind us that gratitude doesn’t come from grand gestures but from shared, heart-centered moments.

Comfort and Healing.
Science shows that our animal companions lower stress, boost mood, and support heart health. Our pets’ presence grounds us, helping us to breathe easier and live from gratitude rather than anxiety and tension.

Trust, Joy, and Peace.
When we open our hearts in appreciation, we feel more centered, confident, and peaceful, which our pets sense instantly. Gratitude becomes a shared vibration, wrapping both species in a warm hug of safety, love, and serenity.

Gratitude as Healing Energy

Gratitude is more than an emotion: it’s energy. When we focus on what we appreciate, our bodies relax and our hearts open. And because our animals are so attuned to us, they feel and appreciate the shift in our energy.

When you pause to thank your animal for their comfort, loyalty, and joy, something changes inside you. Your energy softens, your awareness widens, and the light in your heart glows a little brighter.

In that peaceful state, communication flows naturally. We become quiet enough to sense what our pets are feeling and to hear their messages in return.

Gratitude becomes a language of love between you and your animal. It’s a mutual exchange of thanks that strengthens your heart connection.

A Mutual Exchange of Thanks

Gratitude is a two-way street that our pets travel with us every day. Having a heart-to-heart talk with your animal family is a wonderful way to thank them and vice versa.

If you’d like to communicate with your animal to learn more about their thoughts, feelings, and viewpoints, I encourage you to Book an Animal Communication Session.

May your Thanksgiving be filled with peace, connection, and appreciation for all beings—human and animal alike—who make your world more loving and whole.

Jamie, an 11-year-old Samoyed, was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2021. Since then, he’s received two liver chemoembolization, successfully treating his cancer.

Every 4 months, Jamie travels 4 hours to the veterinary hospital to receive follow-up tests like CT scans, ultrasounds, and blood work. These visits are stressful for Jamie, especially since he needs to be sedated for his tests.

Since his diagnosis, his person Annie sets up Animal Communication sessions before each vet visit to find out how Jamie is feeling, figure out what he needs and prepare him for the arduous trip. Talking with Jamie also helps Annie cope and deal with her anxiety, stress, and fear.

Besides communicating with Jamie before his visits, I also offer him Reiki right before he receives his tests to help him.

Before his last visit, we decided to give Jamie 2 Reiki sessions: one the night before his vet visit and another an hour before his Ultrasound.

After Jamie’s visit, Annie shared the following:

“The 2nd Reiki session made a massive difference because it helped Jamie to reduce his stress enough to receive his Ultrasound and obtain a tissue sample without sedation! His vets were pleased because this was the first time Jamie hadn’t needed sedation! I believe Reiki was the reason why.

Bless you, Cathy, for your care, compassion, and understanding of what Jamie needed.”

I recently spoke with a longtime client, Julie* and her 3-year-old jenday conure parrot, Ziggy*, about several behavioral issues that stemmed from misunderstanding each other.

I first met Ziggy at the bird rescue the day Julie adopted him a couple of years ago. He is a sweet guy, full of sunshine and joy.

Julie wants nothing more than Ziggy’s happiness. His wings are intact so he can fly around the house, and she gives him the freedom to walk on the floor and play with toys. Julie felt that giving him access outside his birdhouse was an act of love.

Previous animal communication sessions with Ziggy focused on healing two potentially dangerous and life-threatening behaviors. The first involves Ziggy pecking at Julie’s feet when he plays on the floor with his toys. Ziggy’s access to the floor created a tripping hazard for Julie that could injure Ziggy or Julie.

Since we had discussed Ziggy’s unwanted behaviors several times before, I was hopeful that Ziggy’s unwanted behavior had stopped after our last conversation with him.

That is until I received the following message from Julie, “Ziggy is still chasing my feet, and it’s getting worse. He is also chewing the heck out of my couch, trying to nest. He’s not getting the message that he must stop. So we need to talk with him to ask him again to stop.”

At the start of our next animal communication session, Julie explained that she felt frustrated since Ziggy’s scary behavior had escalated over the past several months. As Ziggy’s attacks on her feet became more aggressive, she started using a flyswatter to defend herself and make him stop. She noted that she never touched Ziggy with the flyswatter. However, the flyswatter had the opposite effect– it upset, agitated, and scared Ziggy to the point where he felt he needed to defend himself.

When I asked Ziggy telepathically how he was feeling, he shared that he felt confused about Julie’s expectations. Ziggy felt Julie’s inconsistent and sometimes aggressive behavior was part of the issue. I then shared with Julie what he told me. Ziggy asked Julie to give more guidance about what she expected of him. He explained that he attacks Julie’s feet when Ziggy has access, and he wants her attention. Julie, who works out of her home, confirmed that Ziggy is most prone to pecking her when she isn’t paying attention to him, especially when working on the phone or computer.

A new issue Julie was concerned about was Ziggy going under the blanket on the couch, where he was tearing up the sofa to nest. When I tuned into Ziggy telepathically to receive his perspective, Ziggy showed me a picture and shared how he enjoyed being snuggled under the blanket as he created a nest.

In previous sessions, I explained to Julie that it’s an act of love to set clear limits and learn to say “no” to him, especially if it will keep him safe and prevent him from ambushing her feet. Julie knows she has difficulty saying “no” to Ziggy and setting clear and consistent limits. Therefore, Ziggy was free to make his own decisions, which were not always the best or safest.

After hearing everybody’s perspective, I strongly urged Julie to be more explicit about what Ziggy is allowed to do. I also gave her permission to say no when he wasn’t following the rules. I reminded Julie that setting clear limits is about keeping Ziggy and Julie safe.

As I continued to translate Ziggy’s viewpoints for Julie, the three of us discussed different solutions to help resolve their issues.

Julie explained that she was okay putting her previous parrot in his house when she was working. It was a “light bulb” moment for Julie. She finally understood that putting Ziggy in his birdhouse was not a punishment when she couldn’t watch and supervise him.

I also recommended that Ziggy not access the floor unless Julie could carefully watch him prevent unwanted attacks and tripping over him.

Finally, I suggested that Julie spend at least 5 to 10 minutes a day meditating with Ziggy to help strengthen their bond.

After speaking with Ziggy, Julie said, “I had my first meditation session with Ziggy yesterday morning. I did half an hour. I turned on a jungle soundtrack and sat right next to him. He made some adorable noises. I guess he liked it. Also, starting yesterday, if he tries to get under the blanket, I tell him no. He got mad with me yesterday, so I put him in his house for a time-out right away. Tonight, he tried it again. I said no, so he did not go under the blanket. He’s such a good boy and very smart. I now know that I must be consistent with Ziggy. Thank you so much, my friend. Love, Julie and Ziggy.”

As pet parents, we must create clear limits and boundaries to keep them safe. When we don’t, it’s often confusing to the animal, leading to unwanted behaviors that negatively affect the relationship.

Many times, it’s up to us humans to shift our behavior to help our pets shift theirs. In the case of Julie and Ziggy, it was up to Julie to set clear, consistent limits in a calm, peaceful manner to help stop Ziggy’s aggressiveness and destructive behavior.

*To respect client privacy, their names have been changed.

For the past 25 years, as part of my Animal Communication and Animal Reiki practice, I’ve meditated with animals. I’ve also taught my students the art of meditating with animals.

Animals are teachers, healers, and guides. The more I meditate with animals and listen to their musings with an open heart, the more conscious I become of my spiritual essence and interconnections with all species in the web of life.

Here are five lessons I’ve learned from meditating with animals:

Animals mirror our strengths and challenges on the path of self-awareness. They also reflect our energetic state of being.

Meditating with animals creates peaceful and balanced energy, which brings about healing in all aspects of our lives. The more we meditate, the more this compassionate healing energy ripples outward.

Animals instinctively know that meditation includes all aspects of our being– body, mind, and spirit.

Meditating with animals opens our hearts at a deep spiritual level to feel our oneness with life.

Animals live in the present moment, which is a state of enlightenment.

Being on a spiritual path of self-discovery takes courage. Animals support us on our journey with their unconditional love, wisdom, and nonjudgement.

Meditating with animals is enlightening and transformative. When we meditate with them, we become more conscious of our true authentic selves at a spiritual level. They teach us how to listen with an open heart as they guide us home.

It’s also more fun to meditate with animals because they naturally put us in our heart centers which is a win-win.

As pet parents, we do our best to help our animal families to feel safe, loved, and happy. One of the best ways to accomplish this is to share a daily meditation practice with your animal family.

While there are many ways to share quality time with your animal family, meditating together strengthens your relationship and enhances your heart-connection, even if you only have 5 or 10 minutes a day.

Why does meditating with animals have such a profound effect?

Animals are finely attuned to our energy and mirror it. When you feel anxious and stressed, your pets will feel it no matter how hard you try to hide it from them. When you meditate with animals, you show them how much you love and care about them in a calm, peaceful, and open-hearted way.

Here are 5 fabulous reasons to share a meditation practice with your animal family.

Reason #1: Animals are naturally drawn towards peaceful and balanced energy. When you meditate and feel relaxed, so do your animals.

Reason #2: Meditating with animals creates a powerful space of healing and compassion, which enhances your heart connection and relationship with them.

Reason #3: It reduces stress and promotes overall wellness. Daily meditation allows animals to receive a variety of healing benefits like:

Pain relief

Strengthens the immune system

Supports the healing process

Reduces emotional and behavioral issues

Promotes overall wellness

Reason #4: Meditation with animals teaches us to open our hearts and connect through our heart-center. This enables a sense of oneness, which leads to a deeper bond and mutual understanding with animals and Nature.

Reason #5: Animals are masterful meditation teachers and enjoy it when we share calm and loving energy with them.

One of the great things about meditating with animals is you can do it sitting, standing, walking, or even lying down. My cats, Mona and Elvis, prefer it when I do sitting meditations with them.

When my dog, Bodhi, was alive, we loved taking our morning Reiki walks where we connected with wildlife and communed with Nature. It brought us tremendous joy to share this sacred space together.

A daily meditation practice helps you to connect and share relaxed and calm energy. This practice can help animals feel calmer, balanced, and less anxious.

Plus, your animal will thank you in ways you could never imagine when you spend time meditating with them.

You should.

As the pandemic wears on with no end in sight, we need to trust our gut and inner voice now more than ever to keep us safe. I’m depending on my intuitive senses to help me navigate the new normals that don’t feel normal at all.

Animals are wise teachers and guides on how to respond to imminent danger. Animals rarely hesitate to react to the energy around them because they know the best way to keep safe is to always listen to their instincts.

Cats are great examples of how to stay present in the moment. If they feel specific energy is a threat, they quickly move away from it.

As I like to say, “Humans are inclined to run towards danger while non-human animals tend to run away from it.”

All animals, including humans, are born with instincts that guide us in how to respond at any given moment. Gut instincts, inner knowing, hunches, or “spidey senses” are our internal guidance system that alerts us when there is imminent danger.

As adults, it can be challenging to trust our intuition because we are taught that logic and reason are more important than feelings and gut hunches. Children and animals tend to be more in touch with their instincts because they don’t know any different. Therefore, we have to consciously work at reclaiming our ability to recognize and react to our “spidey senses.”

Recognizing your intuition is about listening and trusting yourself at a deep spiritual level. Thankfully, animals continue to show us how to connect, trust and listen to our gut.

Two great ways to develop your intuitive awareness is by practicing Animal Reiki and Animal Communication. When you quiet your mental chatter and worry, communicating telepathically and offering Reiki gives you direct access to your intuition.

When you practice Animal Reiki and Animal Communication, you naturally connect with your intuitive self. The good news is, once you recognize your “spidey senses,” the easier it is to listen and respond to its wisdom and guidance.

I hope you and your animal family continue to stay safe and above all, trust your intuition.
