Do you ever wonder about your rescue animal’s past?
A Rescue Dog Speaks Out: I’m not my past–I’m your dog now.
Worried about their life before you rescued them?
➡️ Note: This is an open letter from a rescue dog who wants his person to stop worrying about his past and focus more on the present moment. This post is inspired by the insights I’ve gained over the past 25+ years, communicating with thousands of rescue animals and their loving humans.
Hi, I’m your rescue dog–
I’m so grateful that you rescued me. I feel your love and concern for my well-being and happiness every day.
I know you sometimes wonder about my past—what I went through before we found each other.
I feel you worry about what I’ve seen or how I was treated, and that’s because you care deeply for my happiness.
I love how much you want to understand me.
However, you will never know what I went through.
Did you know that thinking about my past makes me relive it, too?
A New Story of Us
Imagine how you would feel if someone constantly reminded you of your most difficult experiences or traumas, even when you were trying to move on?
That’s what it can be like for me when you think of my past. You might not realize it, but when you dwell on my past, you’re unintentionally reinforcing my trauma, making it harder for me to heal and move on from it.
I’m not suggesting you ignore what I’ve been through or pretend my past never happened. Acknowledging my journey is important, but recognizing that I’m no longer a rescue or adopted dog–I’m now your dog, will help me feel safe and loved.
When you shift your perspective, it allows us to live more peacefully in the present rather than feeling stuck in old trauma.
Let Me Show You How I Feel Now
I know you mean well when you think about my past. You want to make sense of why I do certain things or react in certain ways.
I can feel your sadness when you imagine what I might have gone through.
It’s okay—I know your heart is in the right place.
But here’s the thing: sometimes the story you’ve created about my past may not be accurate or true.
Every time you worry about my past, I relive it again, locking me in a place where I no longer live or want to be, holding onto a story that no longer defines us.
How Animal Communication Helps Us Both
Talking with me, with the assistance of an Animal Communicator like Cat Malkin, was a game-changer because it helped you better understand my past. Talking about my past with you was healing and freed us both from a place I no longer live.
Thank you for asking me about my past, so you can stop guessing or assuming what it was all about.
Hearing my perspective and receiving answers to your questions has helped us move on from the past.
This new understanding has released me from being tethered to any past abuse or trauma, allowing me to release behavioral issues and trauma I might be dealing with, like anxiety, reactivity, or PTSD.
Instead of seeing me as a victim, I want you to see me as a resilient survivor who’s thriving now. This mindset will help me feel more grounded, secure, and loved.
Let’s focus on our journey together, not what happened before.
Thank you for rescuing me and making me part of the family. You’ve changed my world. And I feel so blessed.
Let’s keep moving forward together in harmony.
With love,
Your Dog
